“An’ it harm none, do what thou wilt.”
Smelling salts have been around since the time of the Roman Empire and have traditionally used to revive someone who has fainted. Recently, the aromatherapy world has taken the concept and expanded it to include other uses. We make these aromatherapeutic salts to soothe anxiety and calm nerves.
Roses are one of the most common flowers around. They are widely adored, gifted often and grown in many places. If you’re anything like us - you might even have too much of them laying around. What to do with all these roses?
Bathe in them to encourage beauty
Carry them to attract love
Add them to a sleep sachet to promote sweet dreams
This is by far the most abundant ink I have in my house is that of inks made from flowers. This is the easiest and fastest inks to be made and require the least amount of materials to produce brilliant and soft colors. The inks from flowers can be either stunning and dark, or a lighter and more pale like one would expect from watercolor. Flower inks don’t last as long as inks produced from berries or nuts, and being left in the sunlight will fade their colors faster, but since this ink is so fast and easy to make, it can always be in supply. The shelf life of this ink is about a month if kept in the dark, but this is dependent on the color itself.
Materials:
Glass containers (preferably mason jars or drinking cups)
A pestle or other wooden tool (to crush the flowers with)
Boiling water
Cheese cloth
Rubbing Alcohol or 100 Proof Vodka
Glass storage container
Optional: Gum Arabic
Steps:
First, gather the flower petals of choice for the color desired (note some flower ink isn’t the same color as the flower petals).
Take these petals and crush them into the glass container, stuffing as many as you can in 1/3rd of the container as possible. The more crushed the petals, the more color will come out.
Fill the container with just enough boiling water to barely cover the flower petals. Do not fill the container, as this will dull the ink.
Set this container aside to brew overnight (I actually leave mine in the window to brew for 24 hours).
Strain the flower petals from the liquid, pouring the colored ink into a clean glass storage container.
Add 1 part alcohol to the container and shake gently (do not shake hard enough to form bubbles).
Optional: You may add Gum Arabic to give the ink a thicker consistency.
A recommendations on flowers, I have found that roses and other soft petaled flowers make a stronger ink.
I have been using homemade rose water as a facial toner & hair rinse for some time now and love it. You can always go and buy some, but I’m always afraid of the additives and don’t want to risk getting a pesky rash since I have overly-sensitive skin!
You can also use rose water for glamory spells, love spells, self-care spells, etc. You don’t have to stop at just rose water; you can basically use any flowers & herbs you would like - lavender, thyme, orange peels - just make sure if you’re going to ingest them or use them on your skin that they are safe and pesticide-free.
What you need:
A handfuls of fresh (prefferably) or dried herbs or flowers
Distilled water
A glass jar with a lid
Vodka (optional)
You can use regular tap water to make herbal waters, but then you have to keep it in the fridge and use it within a few days, or freeze it (I like freezing them into ice cube trays, that way you can just take one out each time you need it). For longer lasting rose water, use distilled water. You can find distilled water in the pharmacy, but a much cheaper way is to go to your nearest gas station and buy some car battery water – which in essence is pure distilled water as well! You can add a tablespoon of vodka to the mix to prolong the shelf life, if you like.
If you use fresh flowers, rinse them well before using. Take a glass jar and fill add a couple of handfuls of dried or fresh herbs or flowers of your own choice. I chose to use rose petals, lavender bud and orange blossom. You could also try thyme, jasmin, chamomile, peppermint, yarrow or a mixture of several different herbs.Bring water to a boil and fill the jar up to three quaters. Put a lid on the jar and let stand for a couple of hours up to overnight. Strain and add the tablespoon of vodka if you like.
I would suggest testing out a bit on your skin if you plan on using it on your body. You can swab a bit on the inside of your wrist, arm, or ankle and leave on overnight to be sure no reaction occur.
The Beach Rose Lux Balm, literally the best ‘fine line’ moisturizing balm I make . It is made with mostly organic rosehip seed oil after being infused with local roses . The appearance of it in person is a super neon orange color, it was really hard to capture on film, but you can totally see it’s aura .
Rose and Almond Oil
This is easy peasy..

Ingredients: Sage, cedar, and rosemary. 1. Hold several stems of herbs together in one hand, all facing the same direction, woody stems together. Wrap the stems together tightly, overlapping a few times to keep it secure, but leaving a longish tail loose (we’ll use this to finish up at the end). 2. The author used half a strand of embroidery thread, but you could use any thin, strong twine. Hold the stems loosely but firmly, and use your hand to smooth the leaves down into a tidy bundle. 3. Keep wrapping, wrap, wrap, wrap – doesn’t need to be too tight. 4. Work your way down the bundle, wrapping with string – when you reach the tip, double back and zig-zag up to the top again. then tie the remainder of string to the loose tail you left loose at the beginning. 5. Ta - da! You’re almost done! 6. Trim off the scraggly bits, and let it dry in a cool-ish place out of direct sunlight for about a week. Thats it!
We love sleep circles. They are great for enhancing dreaming, allowing deeper sleep and warding away bad energy and bad dreams when you’re in a vulnerable state. What we don’t love is surrounding the bed with salt circles or incense ash and getting it in the carpet. Pass.
So here are some ways to make a protective and dream-enhancing sleep circle – without all the mess. 1. Enchant a cute string of lights. Nothing chases away darkness faster than light, so why not put these to use? Weave pieces of thread around the cords in colors that match your desired effect. This is a particularly great option for college witches in dorms. 2. Make your own canopyor buy one and charge it for your intent. This is potentially thicker magical barrier because you can have it completely cover you while you sleep. Stitch in sigils you’ve made into the fabric for your desired effect. 3. Make a chandelier to hang above your bed like ones here and here. Use colored fabric that corresponds with your intent, or hang crystals with your desired associations. Moonstone, amethyst, and clear quartz would be ideal for this kind of fixture. 4. Or make a mobile. Make a simple crystal mobile like the one in this video. Press and dry flowers and herbs of your intent to make the one here. Are you a sea witch with extra shells? Make a fixture like this for protection. The possibilities are endless. 5. Hang some plants associated with protection around your bedroom. A cute DIY for this can be found here. As desert witches, we are partial to hanging little cacti in our planters for their protective abilities. You could also dry your herbs around your bedroom for the same effect. 6. Make a garland to hang around your bed or bedroom. You could make a macrame yarn garland like the one found here made with colors to match your intent. If florals are more your style, make this DIY and write sigils on the leaves.
Blood Moon Oil is a Dragons Blood oil base that is infused with the energy of the Blood Moon. The idea came to me when I was charging my oils under last years Blood Moon. If you don’t know, Dragons Blood is a resin which is used to amplify spell work, And the Blood Moon is an amazing time to cast, As it amplifies your abilities. So in Oil form it is amazing for anointing candles, spell bags, or as an added “oomph” to any spell you do. Making it is simple you need three things.
Crush your resin and add it to your oil (Any Oil will work I close Canola because of its clear color), And shake it vigorously. With any oil recipe I give, I always recommend infusing your oil with your intentions when shaking, Within minutes the Dragons Blood releases its amazing colors into your oil giving it a deep ruby red color. Here is my personal Blood Moon oil to give you an idea of the color to expect.
Once your oil is prepped, and charged with your own intent, Place it outside where it will see as much of the Moon as possible. (I like to put a small mirror under my oils when they’re charging outdoors but that isn’t 100% needed)
After your oil has sat for one whole night, It is ready to use.
*Dragons Blood can sometimes be hard to come by, So if you can’t access it You can still make Blood moon oil. Just skip the part where it is added, and let your oil sit under the Blood Moon for one whole night with a cleansed clear quartz crystal.
This is actually my first time making one of these. I recently found myself in a situation in which I need some backup for the sake of myself and my family, including my pets’ safety. I performed a full cleansing of home and hearth alongside this one. I won’t go into details about its contents, but it has the standard salt, nails, thorns, protection herbs, etc. along with some of my own touches. Its construction involved a lot of spirit conversation, and I even enlisted the aid of the datura twins. They were more than happy to lend their noxious hand to this one.
A couple of the active aspects include: Any harmful or ill-willed intent shall be drawn to the jar (by acting as a decoy) and shred to pieces, before being cleansed and dispersed. Another layer to the working regards harmful and degrading thoughts directed at myself and my family, and the intentional spreading of untruths. They will be sent back to the sender and take with it confusion, doubt, and unease whenever such an attempt is made again. And more…
I left the remainder of the candle to burn down and melt into the lid wax to complete its creation.
Stovetop Incense, sometimes called stovetop potpourri outside of magic circles, is a mixture of ingredients with a liquid base, simmered on the stove in a pan to fill the air with a lovely aroma. This recipe is intended to be simmered all day during Samhain to invite benevolent spirits into the home.
Ingredients:
1 to 2 inches of water
1 apple, cut into slices
3 cinnamon sticks
5 rosemary sprigs
1 teaspoon of whole cloves
few dashes of allspice
2 bay leaves, crushed
optional: ¾ cup of wine or shot of dark liquor
Add water to pan and turn burner to medium-high. Add each ingredient while thinking of loved ones who have passed. Stir the mixture clockwise, asking for peaceful spirits to come into your home for the holiday. Wait until the water simmers, then turn down heat to medium. Stir periodically throughout the day, adding more water when necessary.
The post title for this DIY Oil Lamp is “Magical Mason Jar Oil Lamp” because all you need are decorative items, glass bottles, the right type of wick (click on link to the original source), and 1 tablespoon of oil.
The magic part is that 1 Tablespoon of oil will last 2 hours.
What’s a more inconspicuous way to add witchcraft to the holiday season than by combining the well-known concept of Witch Balls with widely used ornaments? Add the following ingredients to either clear, glass ornaments (so they can be charged by compliments) or to solid ornaments (to be even more unnoticeable) for the desired effects. Family Peace:
