for historical and traditional value, and the poster does not support
the creation of a Hand of Glory, theft, or the desecration of corpses.
Needed:
The left hand of a criminal, hung from the gallows by a road.
Shroud
An earthenware or ceramic container with a lid
Horse dung
Potassium nitrate (saltpeter)
Salt
1 c. Long peppercorns
Five mandrake leaves
1 tbsp vervain
A Dead Man’s Candle
Preparation:
Having cut the left hand, either wrap it in a strip of the shroud, or a shroud that you have yourself prepared. Squeeze as much liquid from the hand as possible by hand. Then place the hand in the earthenware or ceramic container, and cover with the saltpeter, peppercorns, and horse dung, adding more saltpeter until the container is almost full, ensuring that the hand is covered completely. Add salt, vervain, and mandrake leaves, place the lid on the container, seal the jar to contain the spirit, and store in a very warm place until the start of the Dog Days (around the seventh of July, but dates vary.) Then place the earthenware container out in the sun to allow to dry through the rest of the Dog Days. If at the end of the Dog Days when you break the seal, the hand is not fully dried, remove the horse dung from the container and place it on a slow hearth, then place the jar in the hearth and tend it for a full day and night until the third crow of the rooster.
Once dried, remove the hand from the container, and unwrap it from the shroud. Fit the hand around a Dead Man’s Candle and your Hand of Glory is complete. Store wrapped in the shroud itself, or in a box, properly sealed.
