Guard these windows,
Guard all doors,
Guard this room,
from roof to floor.

With these words,
This ward I place.
Guard those within;
Protect this space.

East to West,
North to South,
Only good may enter,
all evil stay out.

Ordering Herbs

I have a few places that I actually prefer to order herbs from, just because of how reliable they are, and the quality of the herbs are great as well too.
  • Mountain Rose Herbs - Super recommend them! I actually order a lot of the herbs I use for teas from here if I don’t grow them myself. They are committed to organic, sustainable farming - which is something I support. Their customer service is awesome to boot, and shipping is generally pretty fast!
  • Monterey Bay Spice Company -  Great selection! Plus on top of that they are very affordably priced, so if you are on a budget I definitely recommend them.
  • Starwest Botanicals - Also a huge selection! Decent prices, although not as good as MBSC. Also has a good selection of organic items (although not as many as MRH which is pretty much mostly organic).
  • Pacific Botanicals - Also organic and sustainable! Affordably priced as well, although the only downside is you have to have a minimum order of $50 for online orders ($100 min order for phone/fax/mail in orders). I haven’t ever had an issue with meeting that limit when ordering, but they also don’t generally do smaller quantities (most/all items are 1lb+). If you are looking to order in bulk, I definitely recommend them!
Thats generally about the order I check sites for things too. MRH is my go-to, I always check them first (plus their tea blends are AWESOME), but the others are wonderful as well! Good luck & have fun! <3

What are Energy Channels?

Energy Channels are the paths that magical energy uses to travel throughout your body.. There are general energy channels that all of your energy runs along, but there are also channels specific for certain purposes.
 What are some purposes of energy channels?
  • Sending and directing energy
  • Receiving general and specific kinds of energy
  • Energy sensing
  • Spellwork-specific energy channels
  • “Clair” abilities (clairaudience, clairvoyance, etc)
  • etc.
Basically, if you can think of a magical ability, there is probably an energy channel for it. Note that individual energy channels can share multiple purposes too.
Channel Purposes Can Overlap
Channels may also interact/overlap with each other to certain ends, especially when there are multiple methods of doing the same thing. For example, tarot cards and scrying are both ways of conducting divination, and both use similar intuitive processes. So it makes sense that there would be some overlap between tarot and scrying energy channels, as both use intuition in a similar way.
How do energy channels develop?
Energy channels develop as you use certain abilities. For example, as you work on your clairaudient capabilities the energy channels used in those abilities will grow, strengthen, and develop. Development can include becoming larger and becoming more defined. Larger energy channels allow for better energy flow and more defined channels are generally able to process/direct energy better.
How long does it take for energy channels to grow?
New energy channels CANNOT be grown overnight, they take time to develop! Think of it like muscles; you can’t get super buff overnight after just one workout. Energy channel development requires rest. You must rest if you want your energy channels to grow. That’s actually why downtime in magic/spirit work isn’t a bad thing, you’re actually giving your channels a chance to grow without strain. Straining your energy channels by pushing yourself too hard can actually slow or stop development or make it so that the channels will develop inconsistently- which will just take more time to reset, defeating the purpose of rushing in the first place.
 However, the speed at which they develop can be increased greatly by an energetic attunement. Energetic attunements cause your channels to grow at a rapid pace, generally for a specific purpose, i.e. reiki attunements causing your energy sensing channels to develop and developing new channels for receiving and directing reiki.
 This time to develop is also why you wouldn’t have 248932977 years of experience of X magical ability because of past lives. While past lives with experience may make it easier to relearn certain skills, the energy channels used for those skills still have to re-develop in your current body, similar to how if you were a kung-fu master in a previous life you’d still have to rebuild your muscles and redo the training in this life.*
 How can I promote the growth of my energy channels?
  • Practice/actively work on the skill you want- that automatically promotes growth.
  • Rest- similar to muscles, channels grow when you are resting, especially with sleep.
  • Send energy to/through the channels to promote growth. This gives them the energy they need to grow.
  • Get an attunement- An attunement is an energetic treatment that causes rapid growth/development in the recipient’s energy system.They can be used to let people access/direct certain energies or just to give the energy system a temporary “boost” in development.
What do energy channels look like? Where are they?
They can be anywhere in the body and can even extend off of the body. They generally look like tubes but can also look like rivers or small spiderwebs. They usually originate from a certain major point/chakra/center and extend outwards. Color can vary based on the being’s energy and can vary by the specific purpose of its channels as well.
 Channels based in the physical body may have specific functions based on where exactly they are located.  Therefore it’s best to be mindful of the channels already in place within that location; rather than try to add an entirely new function, it would be far easier to try and integrate complementing functions. For example, energy channels in the hands are generally much more adept at sending/receiving energy than, say, the channels in your large intestine. If you wanted to improve your skill at sending energy through growing your energetic channels, it would be better to focus on your hand channels than your large intestine channels.
 *Will likely be covered in more detail in a different post.
Energy channels are only one paradigm of using energy work to measure and affect other magical abilities. Obviously this isn’t the only way to develop one’s abilities, it’s just another tool that people can consider going forward.

Transitions between the Wheel

(For the four seasons)
This is from my personal practice with observing the wheel of the year and my focus on each transition between the sabbats. I honor the current seasons in between. Each transition has it’s importance to self care and managing the home and garden. I will probably add to this later cause some paragraphs I wrote I feel like are a bit vague. Some of these transitions are not meant to be 100% literal and static but I feel like they are good areas to focus on for that moment in the year.
Yule->Imbolc
Resting

During the thick of winter when it’s too cold to do anything and always dark, it’s the perfect moment in the year to rest. The focus is on relaxing, taking extra time to sleep and care for the body especially to not get sick.
Winter is also ‘spa’ season because the air is so dry and harsh it’s a good time to soak in hot baths and scrub away dead skin and moisturize with protective lotion. Do not try to make new plans, yet sit home, rest and reflect.
Imbolc -> Ostara
Cleansing

When winter thaws it’s a great time to clean the home and prepare for spring. Personally, I also like to do a body cleanse since I tend to eat a lot of processed (yet delicious ;-;) foods all year round. This also makes up for all the heavy foods I’ve been eating since Summer (all the BBQs) to Winter comfort foods. As I clean the home and get rid of stuff that has accumulated over the year, I clean the body. Also the focus is on cleaning the home as well. Breathing in the same air, especially if its full of dust, is really unhealthy and it’s good as the days are getting a little warmer to open up the windows for a few minutes to allow in fresh air to circulate. This is also the time of year I throw out old furniture, accumulated things and rearrange furniture in the room as well.
Ostara -> Beltane
Sowing

Spring is a great time to germinate sprouts along with other seeds and clean the backyard or garden to grow plants. If you like to compost it’s a time to start mixing in the vegetable/fruit/plant scraps with the soil. Spring is also a great time to sow bigger changes in life as well. Something about the warm new season brings an air of flirtatiousness and ‘socialness’ that makes it perfect for making new friends or finding a partner. (Probably because people can finally come out of hibernation). It’s also a fantastic time to work on your image and portfolio and apply for long term jobs that begin in the summer or fall. Spring is the season for new beginnings and putting long term plans into action.
Beltane -> Litha
Growing

A tradition I like to do on Beltane is repotting of plants and gardening. Repotting plants is a tradition I try to focus on every year because it’s very easy for house plants to die due to dead soil. Plus it makes the inside of the house super vibrant and lively to have fresh new soil in pots. From this point to summer solstice is the point of growth. Growth in the garden but also growth of personal goals. May and June feel like hectic months where there are so many events and opportunities to advance your work or change your social scene, that if I am not personally progressing, I focus all of my attention on my growth.
Litha -> Lughnasadh
Thriving

Its the heat of summer! It’s time to get out and feel the intense hot energy and use its power to focus on goals and networking! Where I am there’s usually an exciting event every week where it’s an opportunity to make more connections and meet more friends but also since its warm and nature is so vibrant it’s time to take some days to relax and get away to enjoy the heat and life of nature. Go to the beach, go hiking, swim in a lake, sleep under the stars. Be active since the efforts will pay off.
Lughnasadh -> Mabon
Reaping

This is the time you earn what you’ve sowed both literally and metaphorically. If you have a garden its the time it will start giving back. If you are an active goer of a farmers market you will notice how beautifully abundant the stands are. If in Spring you’ve sent out tons of job applications, and in Summer got the job you’ve wanted and worked hard, then by now you should start seeing some results. If there are no results being seen it’s a time for reflection and re-strategizing. There is a second chance in this time to start again before the cold and the holiday season bulldozes through.
Mabon -> Samhain
Harvesting/Gathering

This is the time to gather and harvest. Usually family tends to gather now since it’s the holiday season. There’s not much other than gathering to be done since family and holidays are bombarding you from all sides. Also there is an abundance of food. This is great to store for the next transition which is
Samhain -> Yule
Preparation

This is the moment to prepare for winter. My warddrobe completely changes here, I take up knitting projects that were abandoned last Imbolc, and I store food and herbs for the winter to use. Also making preserves from things in the garden or hand knitting clothes make great presents for the winter holidays. This is also a time to prepare the garden for hibernation. Take in potted plants, harvest the last of the herbs and food (that are not potted). Make sure plants you do not want to die have a place to chill in the house.

I Will Teach You How to Gain Some Witchy Energy

Alright my friends. I have this problem: I am unmotivated and extremely barren energy-wise. Here are my fun ideas for gaining energy! This is kind of a Witchy self care day plan. You don’t have to do all of these btw. Do what you can. Anywho. Onto the things!
🔮 Go outside. Find a tree, preferably a strong mauve old one. Oaks are perfect. Place your hands on the bark, or by your sides. Align your feet with where the roots should be, and take a deep breath. As you exhale, visualize all the emptiness inside you draining with the air. Then inhale, and take in the trees strength from the roots. Do this as much as you need to.
🔮 make yourself a sachet full of your favourite flower petals. I would use carnation for strength, lavender for cleansing (I know its an herb pfft), and sunflower for energy and brightness. It can be a coffee filter full of your flower petals. Just tie off the end with a hair tie. Or you can be fancy. Idc. Whatever works, friendo.
🔮 Draw a sigil for energy. Good energy, mind you. Whatever that means for you, make it. Draw it on yourself or on the sachet, or somewhere on your clothes. Like a tag.
🔮 If you have spirit companions ask them for energy and help. Sometimes they are more than willing to offer you some help!
🔮 Grab yourself a water bottle. Put some quartz in it. Now shake that magical drink like there’s no tommorow for a full minute. Make sure the quartz is clean and put the cap on tight. Take out the quartz (put the water in a glass so its easier to do so) and drink the gem elixir! Woo hoo!!!
🔮 Draw yourself a bath. Add some bubbles. Fill that puppy. Now light a few yellow candles. Set quartz, carnelian, and turquoise somewhere they won’t get wet, but still close to the candles. The energy you will feel should be amazing, trust me. The quartz should amplify the energy of the other crystals and the candles. The carnelian is full of warmth and joy and vitality. The turquoise helps with creativity, and in my experience, motivation and inspiration.
🔮 Put a pillow on your bed or take one from it. Say this chant over it as you draw a circle on its surface with your finger:
“Pillow keep my energy tight
in your arms every night.”
That should keep your energy from draining whole you sleep. I found that when I dream a lot, I feel tired when I awaken. When I did this, it never happened again.
🔮 Take a nap. Or lay down and rest for an hour. Don’t make any posts or do things that could drain you. Just chill and try to recharge. Place crystals and herbs nearby if you want.
🔮 Make sure to put at least one of these types of days in your schedule every two weeks or so. Alternatively, do it when you need it. I need it Evert week. Some of you might need it more often. You do you.
🔮Eat lots of fruits and veggies. Their nutrients provides lots of good energy, physically and metaphysically (due to their properties). If you can’t afford these, try growing your own or adding herbs and spices to your food if you’ve got them.

MESSENGER Spacecraft
MESSENGER (whose backronym is Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry, and Ranging, and which is a reference to the Roman mythological messenger, Mercury) was a NASA robotic spacecraft that orbited the planet Mercury between 2011 and 2015. The spacecraft was launched aboard a Delta II rocket in August 2004 to study Mercury’s chemical composition, geology, and magnetic field.
The instruments carried by MESSENGER were used on a complex series of flybys – the spacecraft flew by Earth once, Venus twice, and Mercury itself three times, allowing it to decelerate relative to Mercury using minimal fuel. During its first flyby of Mercury in January 2008, MESSENGER became the second mission after Mariner 10’s 1975 flyby to reach Mercury.

The Language of Spell Crafting

Spell creation is one of the most personal and individualized part of a magician’s craft.
Between each kind of magician, there are different methods of magic and spell-work. Then, between those kinds, there are sections and lineages who draw their inspirations from different places. Within those lineages, there are individuals who pull from their own life and sense of the world to craft their spells. There can be a lot said about a witch when looking at their spells. The different cultures, the subtle differences in elements or components, the incantation, the ritual action, etc. It’s all very telling of who they are as a practitioner.
Solely relying on others’ spells can take away the identity of the practitioner. Don’t get me wrong; taking spells from books, blogs, websites, etc is not a bad thing. It helps a great deal, especially when you need something specific and they have it when you’re not sure how to get there. I think that’s why I get spell requests so often. I’ll tell you a secret though; not even half of those spells are in the Black Book. They were created there and then for the person who requested them.
But how? How do you connect the ends? I think it’s important that you reread that last line, but in a different light. There is no definite way of creating spells. There are common factors in spells to make them successful, but they do not limit individuality. It’s all individualized and up to the practitioner. The way they make spells, the way they cast spells, and the way they approach spells can help them understand who they are as a practitioner. So I’ll pose the question again. “How do you connect the ends?”
Factors
I mentioned before that in most spells, there are common factors. Many witches and magicians use these as guidelines for crafting spells. There are three factors that are the most often encountered in age old spells.
1. Intention/Willpower/Want
2. Incantation (whether spoken aloud or internally)
3. Ritual action
While the last two components may be interchanged in order, the first must be spread out through the entire operation. To cease the intent is to deprive the fire of oxygen, and thus end the spell before it starts.
These three things are fairly self explanatory.
Before you do a spell, you have to want it. You have to want it badly enough that you’d bend the world to get it. That desire fuels your will, your intent, and seeps into the words you say and the actions you perform. When focused and harnessed, it sets your work ablaze and makes it come true. This want can also be replaced with need, which can quicken a spell faster than almost any other power.
The spoken part of a spell is often what many people mistake for the spell itself. Incantations are only words. When power is put behind them, then they have the chance to make magic. Rhyming has been a popular method of incantation for a very long time, but incantations simply speaking the caster’s intention have been just as popular. Many people like to create their incantations before creating the rest of their spell, some after. Some also speak theirs intuitively in the midst of casting the spell.
The ritual action is often what drags the spell into fruition. The act of ritual mimicry has been used for millennia across every culture in nearly every magical tradition as a way to create change in the world. That which is mimicked is created. Skins and pelts are worn for shapeshifting, stabbing and smashing have been used for curses, wrapping and tying have been used for binding, etc. The ritual action mimics what the creator wishes to bring into the world. For the practitioner, their ritual action should speak to whatever the goal is to them symbolically.
Components and Ingredients
I like to use cooking as a metaphor for spell-work. Why? Because everything has to be cohesive and harmonious. Otherwise, the spell will be haywire or shite.
When you create a spell, you have to take everything into account. Remember, specifics are important. I’m not just talking about incantations. I’m talking about knowing what you want, down to the nitty gritty.
Let’s say that we’re cooking up a love spell. Except, this isn’t your run of the mill love spell. Let’s say that this love spell isn’t looking to inspire lust, or at least not to a large degree, rather strong affections.
One of the first things I think of is what elements or ingredients speak to my goal, based on previously earned knowledge and old folklore. If we’re talking about gentle love, I’ve got a few go-to elements; a small amount of vanilla bean, dried apple flesh, and a pinch of coriander. These components will be bound together and put into a doll or a pouch. The name of the one who is to be charmed is whispered over it and kissed.
What do these components have in common? Sweet things. Vanilla is sweet and warm, and so are apples. They make me think of home and a warm oven, a hearth (or in this case a heart). Coriander is that touch of spice needed to move things along, but it doesn’t overpower the other two. Whispers to a lover’s ear and a soft kiss I also see as sweet things. This is a charm of romance. It’s a delicate thing, though with a simple spell.
It’s incredibly easy to upset it. Adding more things like cinnamon, clove, or allspice, though used in making sweet things and baking, could have turned that lover into a lust addled fool. Using saliva instead of a kiss could’ve also done the same.
What could’ve also harmed the spell is if wildly different ingredients are mixed together. Bleeding hearts, vanilla bean, and orris root would make for a rather unruly, or confused, spell. They are all associated heavily with love and love magic, but each constitutes different subtleties about what love is or what love means, thus each warrants a different use in a different situation. Is there a time when one of those two are married, or maybe even all three? Perhaps. This will be a very specific case, though.

The goal of the spell must be spoken in the actual components of the spell just as much as in the words and the actions. The ingredients are not to be thrown together with general (and sometimes sloppy) associations found in Barnes and Noble witch books. They are to be carefully chosen, handled, and married to produce the most fluent, successful spell. What is done with those components is just as important as the components itself.

Actions and Deeds

Cursing for one person might be pricking a wax image with hot needles, but for another it might be lighting that wax image on fire and watching it burn. Different circumstances, styles, and magicians will make for different approaches. A bone that is crushed and blown on the wind will conjure spirits, but the crushing of the bone itself could also remove influence from spirits in the area. It is the intention, as well as the other factors of the spell, that will decide this.

The physical nature of spells if often written off in New Age methods and modern ways. Traditional spell-casting is tethered to some sort of action that serves as a symbol and a doorway through which the spell enters the world. Are these actions incredibly complex? Absolutely not.
Witches have been calling up winds and storms with nothing but whistling for a long time. Witches also have been reputed to cast spells simply by staring or touching things. This lore is as old as anything and exists alongside witches in many cultures.
An action, no matter how minute, is an intention put forth and succeeded. It breaks the barrier of the mental and causes something to become real. Actions are results.
As with all of the other part of a spell, this needs to be unified with everything else. Harsh, quick motions won’t do for a spell that is to inspire gentle love. It needs a soft hand. What that looks like depends on the magician.

It’s important to remember that when choosing actions for spellwork they must resonate with the practitioner. A protection spell might involve waving a rod of oak over the boundaries of one’s home. It might also be slapping the stick off of the ground around the boundaries of the home. Whatever the intention and style of the practitioner will influence how a spell is cast. It tells a story about who they are, what they’ve done, where they’ve learned, and the nature of their magic. Though the differences might be slight, it shows the individuality of the practitioner.

Bonus: Sacrifices
Most modern practitioners have no idea what this word truly means, let alone how to use it in magic. The word conjures up images of animals being cut open, bloody knives, and killing. Though this is a form of sacrifice, it is not all sacrifice. Simply put, sacrifice is the giving up of something in exchange for something else. That thing you give up, though, has to be something of value to you. It’s not sacrifice unless it stings.

The use of sacrifice in spellwork causes the magic to burn hotter and brighter. It works faster and it becomes stronger. It also tends to make magic a bit more permanent.
It can look like a pin prick on the finger, but it can also be someone destroying gifts from someone to set a spell on them.
It can be offerings, taken from yourself, and given to spirits or deities in exchange for favors. It can be burning a treasured photograph of a lover to make them love you back.

This aspect of spellwork has become increasingly less popular over time, with people not wanting to pay for what they ask. It is not always a necessary part of magic, but the strongest spells have some form of sacrifice behind them. As artists bleed for their passions, so must the magicians for their magic. It makes it real, especially in the practitioner’s eyes. You wouldn’t give something you cherished unless you truly believed in the goal looking to be accomplished.

Individualizing
If there is one thing that I’ve tried to stress in spellcrafting, it’s individualization. A witch’s spells are not their own until they’ve individualized them. Just as all of witchcraft is very personal, so must the spells be. They should speak to your goal, but they should be using your voice to do it.

Read from the folklore, follow the legends, listen to past uses, but make everything your own. Maybe you’ll figure out how to apply the folklore of birch bark in a different way than most witches would. Maybe you’ll figure out how to be-spell a new working tool to do something that most witches don’t know of. Who knows?
The world is quite wide. Methods of spellcasting vary between lands. What lands do you descend from? What can they inform you of spellcasting? Can you join the knowledge of one and the other? Can you make a method that is entirely for you?

Spellcrafting is a trying thing. It is a subtle art and not an easy task to master. It’s also incredibly personal.
It’s a language with thousands of different dialects, and millions of different accents.
How will you speak it?

Witch Tip #398

           Your grimoire doesn’t need to be pretty. Every scribble, crossed out line, or stain adds to the personality and appeal. If I have two books of shadow in front of me, one that’s pristine and white and cute, and one that’s overstuffed and smells like ink and aged paper… I’m always gonna pick the reality’s masterpiece, not a man made fantasy.

Working with Spirits:

I see a fair amount of posts that deal with Spirit Workings and whether or not this is a safe practice for anyone to do. My honest answer is ‘yes’. I say as much because the measures taken to protect yourself, to learn to identify what entities are what, when you’re being lied to, and when your Spiritual Self is in danger, are all very personal experiences.
This is not to say as learning from others more experienced is not necessary, I always find that helpful personally, but what I am saying is that everyone learns these skills in their own time, in their own way. Sometimes it takes some misfortunes and bad experiences to actually learn first-hand what it is you really are dealing with.
I am completely self-taught, save some of the guidance and wisdom I have received from my Master Teacher. Her experience and knowledge has been a great asset, and much of what she taught me has been added to my own tool kit. That being said, the most profound and deeply sunken in lessons I’ve learned were all first-hand experience. Is it potentially dangerous? Are there certain risks that come with working with other realms and beings? Of course! But this does not mean that people should avoid it due to lack of solid experience. It isn’t a game to be taken lightly, but nor is it something that interested beginners should be steered away from, should their Souls call out to this work. After all, I think the majority of us got into this due to personal experiences or desires to learn more about the Unseen world - especially so for those that have been hassled by Spirit Beings before.
Basic things to know when getting into this are:
  • Trust your instincts when dealing with an entity. If it feels untruthful, untrustworthy, uncomfortable, or flat-out negative or dangerous, best to send the spirit away and close that door for a while.
  • Shielding is also a helpful skill, since shields can be programmed to bar the dangerous entities from entering your space. This will not necessarily stop them from showing up and trying to poke at the barrier, but it does afford a fair amount of protection. If when I am working with Spirits, one cannot cross the threshold when I have invited other beings in, that is a pretty good indicator to me that this being has ill intent. The shield would not bar them otherwise.
  • Grounding is equally important. You need to know how to get yourself back into this plane and stabilized if you plan to do this sort of work.
  • Protections: Yes, this is separate from the shields, because protections should be made to stay with you. Something you feel comfortable with such as a charged stone or jewelry piece, for example. This can be very helpful for when you are out and about, should some entities decide to show up on a whim. After all, if you agree to be a channel or work with these beings, they will always find and attract to you. Better safe than sorry.
This is a rewarding, interesting, eye-opening sort of work, and so long as you are aware that there are risks, you may be exposed to things you did not want. If you are completely okay with this reality, I see no reason why you shouldn’t go for it! Just remember to trust yourself and your gut feelings, as often they are going to be your best bet. Remember, a Spirit is not necessarily who or what it claims to be, and may even give you a name or a face to try to get your guard down. Trust your instincts, as they tend to be more reliable than what the being is putting out. Get an odd feeling in the back of your mind? Back off and digest this, but remember to never leave any doors open. Close them before you walk away to make certain nothing follows or gets through without your permission.
My one final warning is this: If you are plagued with self-doubt or fear about working with Spirits, best not to get into it until you feel more secure. Your fears and doubts can seriously play against you in such workings, often clouding your mind and judgement. Keep calm and keep aware, but do not showcase fear and doubt to any entity. Negatives often seek that sort of energy to fuel their own power. The more negative energy you give off, the more they will attach and feed from you.

A note about jars and herbs and mold

I’ve seen posts that both warn witches not to put herbs in jars because it causes them to mold, and then other posts exclaiming about how jars have been used to store herbs for centuries. and i have yet to see a post that actually focuses on the problem. because they’re both right if they don’t focus on the actual issue

do not put fresh herbs in jars. only put dried herbs in jars.

you know when you leave bread out of its airtight bag and then it gets stale? that’s the water evaporating from it. now it’s a dried husk.
same principle, things with water in them, over time the water inside them leaves, evaporates, and then you’re left with something dried up.
however, when you put fresh herbs in jars, they still have the water in them. if you seal it up, it still naturally seeps out of the herbs, but then it has nowhere to go and collects inside the jar, and molds.
Dry your herbs first so you can avoid moldy jars, store herbs to your little heart’s content.
